Finally, we have POWER again!
Nov. 15th, 2007 10:14 amOn Monday morning the wind started blowing really hard (some reports say it was as high as 90km/h) and we (my family and I) were without power for two whole days.
We did manage to stay warm through most of it with the wood fireplace, though everywhere other than the living room was really cold (approximately 50°F in my room, though I really can't rely on that thermometer), so most of the time we stayed in the living room.
I had managed to snag internet access from campus once (they didn't seem to have had any problems with losing power, though many of the websites I used seemed to go up and down (as in the connections between me and the servers were going up and down), so I could at least check on some webcomics (those of which I could remember. I suppose that's what I get for having links for all the comics I read in a webpage instead of having to remember the links all the time...
One of the things that probably helped to cut our power was one of the power lines just a few doors down from us that had been touching another line (causing some sparks, but as it had been raining the previous night nothing actually caught fire), shortly after which it parted ways with itself.
It's a good thing that I've kind of been collecting LED flashlights, as it gets rather dark at night these days, and with no power, it's really dark inside, too.
So I'd been carrying a flashlight with me most of the time, but when I wanted to read, I used a "goose-neck" LED lamp that attached to the neck of my sweater (as the neckline is a little wide) and had an LED "parrot" on my should much of the time.
On Tuesday night, with most but not all of my math homework completed, I was sent over to my Grandpa's house to finish, as there wasn't enough heat, light, or peace to do so at home (my two-year-old little brother probably wouldn't have helped with his bouncy, kind of constantly making some sort of distracting noise).
By that time I'd already completed much of the work required, so I didn't take much time to finish.
After that, my family and my Grandpa went to Ihop for dinner.
Tuesday night the power came on at about 1:30am in the morning, which woke me up as I'd left my bedside lamp on earlier to let me know when the power went back on.
Apparently they weren't finished working on the lines, as the power went out about 5am for about an hour then came on for good.
So now I have to catch up on LJ, webcomics, and all the forums I visit...

Take only what you need to survive

Good luck with the homework!

Date: 2007-11-16 07:03 am (UTC)I teach the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge. Sounds like you had heat covered, the water was running, and IHOP took care of food, so you didn't do too badly.
We would have had better heat if the furnace was completely run on gas (as it is, it's only heated by gas but everything else runs on electricity), the water still ran as well as the hot water tank was still hot (also heated by gas), and mostly we munched on various things that didn't need to be heated for breakfasts and lunches, but for Monday's dinner had hotdogs roasted on the fire, with Ihop for Tuesday's dinner.

As at least half of this city's power lines are above-ground, and as we seem to have these wind storms every year, it would make sense to be prepared (Irony of the day: I'm currently listening to the soundtrack from The Lion King, and guess what song's currently playing? Yup, "Be Prepared"...) as opposed to being merely ready for them by chance.
Good luck with the homework!
Thanks! I'll get it back tomorrow so I'll find out how I did later (recently I've been getting a fairly consistent 19/20 on most of the homework assignments).
