If you're interested, Spiral Knights is a free-to-play game, so it won't cost anything to play.
"Free-to-play" is a fairly recent concept, where (practically) the whole game is available to play for free. Players can pay to obtain certain things faster or earlier, but don't generally get too much of an advantage over non-paying players.
It doesn't update very often, and doesn't download very large updates when it does. (unfortunately, I don't know how much data it passes back and forth to the server during normal play)
