Far, far, far too often.
I leave my email program open when I'm at home, and open it again almost as soon as I get home.

Kind of sad, really.
Most of the mail I get are from a couple of mailing lists, and I hardly read them any more...

The iPhone bleeps, I answer it with guitless haste. That's the modern sound of friends and socialising in today's excessively busy world. I'd feel bad if I ignored it.

Yeah, same here. When my email program dings I usually jump to it fairly quickly.
(if I'm not in the middle of something I can't pause, of course)

Sometimes I do feel guilty about reading my messages so quickly though, especially in the face of how long it takes me to formulate a response...

That's something which in our busy modern world is difficult to achieve a balance. I like to respond to messages from my friends promptly, but meaningfully. When a message from them conveys something complex and it takes my 8-bit brain a while to read through a few times to comprehend there's always a risk that it's going to slip into the backlog.
