I'm of two minds on this now. The pine laminate has a very sturdy feel that I really like, and also comes with a nice-looking surface, but you've raised the concern about losing small parts on the wood-grain finish. Would sufficient lighting be enough to prevent that?
On the other hand, I would like a surface that's easy to clean, so melamine or some other kind of laminate would be a fairly good choice.
Unfortunately, though, all the other furniture in my room is either brown or wood-grain so a white surface would stand out like sore thumb...
